Blog Post #2

wow
Did You Know? 3.0 By Karl Fisch
As I watched this video, the first thing that came to my mind was what is the point. I understand that technology has greatly improved, but I am not sure if this video is saying it is a good or bad thing. There were many interesting facts in the video and some of it really shocked me. Also, I am very curious about how the information was obtained.
The thing that really stood out the most to me is how India has more honor kids than America has kids. That makes me wonder what they are doing right, or what are we doing wrong. I thought America was the most advanced country in the world but now after watching this video I am not sure. This video left me with a different perspective of America.
Mr. Winkle Wakes by Mathew Needleman

This is a neat video. I understood the point of it after my first time watching it. The video is about technology, and its advancement over the past one hundred years. What surprises me is how schools are left behind. After watching this video, I feel like schools are not preparing students for the reality of the world and its every day changes. If schools are not technologically advanced, then they are far behind.
I feel like everything is changing so fast and if you are slow about any little thing, then you will be left behind. It is already so much about technology that I do not know and I feel just like Mr. Winkle sometimes. Every time I feel like I am mastered one form of technology, it upgrades to something else. Like cell phones, every year there is another upgraded version of it.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

This video was not what I expected it to be. It made some interesting points about creativity and children. I thought the story about the little girl drawing the picture of God was funny. To me, as children get older and in school where right and wrong are such a big deal, they lose some creativity. Like Mr. Robinson said, children have a fear of being wrong and I agree no child wants to be wrong.
I love how he said that some of the most highly creative and intelligent people in the world think they are not because what they were good at in school was not valued. I think that I am lucky to be good in math and that it is valued, but not everyone is. I feel like the extracurricular activities are not viewed as important as the core courses but in actuality, they give out scholarships for them and there are special schools designed for them. I believe creativity should be incorporated into other aspects of learning and in time, I think the dropout rate in school will decrease.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

I really liked this video. I enjoyed watching it. I love how the teacher uses technology in her classroom, and is teaching her students to use it as well. The more I watch videos like this, the more I realize that technology is very important in today’s society. I also realize that I am not as computer literate as I thought I was.
As a future teacher, I really appreciated her approach to the school curriculum. I feel like teachers should use more than one method of teaching in the classroom. Just like her, I realize that not every student learns the same way and like her, I want to be able to reach a child no matter what his or her weaknesses are. Now, everything is being done with some form of technology.

  1. Don't be taken in by some of the statistics in Did You Know. Watch for a post on the Class Blog tomorrow about this.

Is technology good or bad? Isn't it the use to which things are put that is good or bad?

Change is happening more rapidly than ever before. How do we keep up? How will you keep up as a teacher? How will you prepare yourself before you become a teacher?

The dropout rate will increase? I think you meant to say decrease. Correct?

You write: "I also realize that I am not as computer literate as I thought I was. " My guess is that you are not alone.

  2. Hi Kiara, I am just as astounded as you are by how far behind education is in the world of technology, and how much technology can enhance education. You couldn't be more right about Sir Robinson, creativity is vital in education. We should not hinder our children's creativity by instilling a sense of fear of being wrong. As a child, my classmates always appreciated me asking questions aloud in class. They were always too afraid that they would look stupid by asking questions or by incorrectly answering questions in front of the class. We should let students know that (regardless of whether they believe it is a stupid question or not) "If you never ask, then you will never know". Hopefully our upcoming generation of educators will be able to get this message across to our students. Another one of my goals is to have the ability to reach students of all academic levels. With technology having the power to intrigue such a varied audience, our possibilities are endless.
