Summary Post of C4K comment 1 and 2

hows it going

I comment on a student name Ryan’s About Me and the Manifesto posts. My comment on the About Me post was about how we have something in common because we both have big families, and that it is good to hear that education is important to him. My comment on the Manifesto post was about how I felt like he was heading in the right direction. I feel like his manifesto exhibited good qualities, like being respectful to his self, peers, and adults, were all good and positive. In both comments, I encouraged Ryan to continue to work hard, and he is sure to be successful.

Blog Post #5

podcast
Judy Scharf’s post tells what a podcast is and how to use it. A podcast allows information to be shared across the world via the internet.  The Education Podcast Network is trying to bring together helpful information for teachers, all in one place. In addition, it is a place for people to share their knowledge and learning’s with other teachers. The benefits of broadcasting in the classroom, tells of the many benefits of broadcasting in the classroom. Some of the benefits are, the parents can see what their children are doing in the classroom, it promotes creativity and innovation, it is an effective way of interacting with students outside of the classroom, etc. All of the posts are very helpful to me as a future educator. They tell me how to incorporate technology inside the classroom, and the benefits of it.

technology & learning

Don’t Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please? By: Scott McLeod
I really like this post. I think it is a great way of informing people about the good and the bad of technology. I think technology is very useful. The problem is that some people abuse and misuse it. Technology should be an accessory, and used appropriately. Who is Mr. Scott McLeod? Mr. McLeod is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Iowa State University. He is a teacher with strong beliefs about technology. He believes that schools are changing to slow, and technology to fast. He is also the director of UCEA Center for the Advanced Studies of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE).
The iSchool Initiative
This video was about whether or not technology should be fully incorporated into school. It explained the benefits of using iSchool. Also, ways it could save the school and students money. I think that is a great idea. I knew that all those things where possible but now that I have watched that video, I really see all that technology can be in school. I thought the invention of smart boards was great but iSchool really tops it.
As I keep saying, technology is much more advanced than I thought. Every assignment that I have done has taught me a little more, but this really shocks me. If all this is possible with one device, I wonder why it is not used worldwide. iSchool would be a brilliant tool for high school and college students. I really hope that one-day iSchool can be used in schools.
The Lost Generation
This was very neat and interesting. I love how the video said one thing read from the beginning and another from the end. This puts things into perspective, because people do not really listen until the worst happens. I know it sounds crazy, but that is how I feel. This video sort of reminds me of a cigarette commercial how it is black and white. Also, how the message that is given starts by saying the opposite of what their intentions are. Overall, the point was clear.
Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir
I think this is amazing. As usual, I did not know that this was possible. They sounded good, for them not to have met before this recording. I cannot figure out how this was put together. I know now that I have to become more technologically literate than I am because I am very far behind. This proves that anything is possible with technology and it is advancing more, and more, everyday.

Additional Assignment #1

alt="Pitcairn Islands map"title="wolframalpha.com Kiara Blackmon's Screenshot

I think the educational implications provided by Google square and wolfram alpha is the same. They both provide the information in an organized manner. The information is set up to be easily viewed by those using the sight. Also, they provides all the information need on a trusted site. Before this assignment, I had never heard of either wolfram or Google. Also, before I watched the additional assignment video, I did not notice the way Google square was set up versus the regular Google. My comments about Did You Know? have changed, because now I realize that I have to look at more than just one aspect of the situation. Now it is put into perspective that all factors of the situation must be looked at. Also, I know that I should not take everything I hear at face value. I know I should do more research and make my own conclusion.

Food For Thought: I think that is so good how the little boy who was illiterate was able to use the ipad. It also made me wonder why is it so hard for people who live in a technological world can not operate the simplest form of technology.

Michael Wesch: A Vision of Students Today

This video is one of the best I have watched so far. This really touched on my college experience. I feel like sitting in the classrooms while the teacher talks for most subjects do not teach me what I need to know. I also know that I will have accumulated an enormous amount of debt by the time I graduate. I believe this video illustrates the way most college students think and feel because I know many of the students who bring their computers to class are surfing the web or on facebook, not doing anything pertaining to the class.
I do not think I could at anything or change anything about this video. I feel that they did an extremely good job and that most students can relate to it. At first, I was not sure what technology had to do with the video but at the end it said, “Some suggest technology can save us”. I am not sure how technology can save us, but the video touched on valid points.

"It's Not About the Technology" by Kelly Hines
I really like her idea about technology. As a future teacher, I believe it is not about the technology but about how the teacher incorporates it into their teaching. I am not saying technology is not important but it should not be the bases of the classroom, it should be an accessory. When I say accessory, I mean technology should be incorporated into learning, not learning incorporated into technology.
Mrs. Hines made some very valid points. I completely agree that teachers must be learners. Not everyone learns the same. This means that the teacher needs to learn or be aware of what method works for each student. That is why it is important for teachers to be learners as well. Each year, teachers should learn a new and improved way of teaching the required materials. There is so much information that can be obtained through technology, but a good teacher is need to access it and put it into good use.
Karl Fisch: Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?
I am somewhat speechless. Some parts I agree with and some I do not. I do not think that everyone or every teacher should be technologically literate. I do believe that it may hinder their students some, but not extremely. It should be a personal choice whether technology is incorporated into a teacher’s classroom.
Mr. Fisch said, “If a teacher today is not technologically literate - and is unwilling to make the effort to learn more - it's equivalent to a teacher 30 years ago who didn't know how to read and write.” This really stood out to me. I feel like a teacher does not have to be technologically literate to be successful, but at the same time I believe technology is an asset to education today. Mr. Fisch ideas/beliefs gave me something to think about when it comes to technology and education.
This is so crazy to me because I wrote my comments as I read this blog. When I got to the end, I started thinking, maybe teachers should be technologically literate and maybe it should not be a choice because of the changing times. I really do not know where I stand anymore about technology and education.
Gary Hayes Social Media Count
This is amazing. When you look at it from this perspective, a lot of time is spent using technology. This backs up what Karl Fisch said about teachers needing to be technologically literate. I am finally seeing how important technology is.

Summary Post C4T Teacher #1

teacher #1

In Mrs. Still’s first blog post that I commented on, she was talking about how excited she was about starting her sixth year of teaching. She talked about how nerves she was in her first years of teaching, and how she had everything planned out the night before the first day of school. She also explained how their first day of school went goes and how it is a day for the teachers and students to get to know each other. Her second post was about how all her students like her because she is open-minded, tolerant, and approachable. She also told us about a student whom she had last year, he would not talk to her or any other teacher, and when she got her rooster, she noticed he was in her class again this year. She said how he was the same way this year but when the opportunity came during an assignment he need help on, she took it to get through to him. The way she got him to open up to her was by talking about the Three Stooges, which was something they both liked.
My comment on the first post was about how I appreciated how Mrs. Still is still excited and happy about being a teacher. I also told her how I liked their use of the first day of school and that it is a great idea to for them to get to know each other. My second post was about how I did not want to be one of the teachers who do not care about getting through to their students, but like her who feels like it is important and uses every opportunity to do so. Also, how teachers are a major influence in the lives of their students because they are with them 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Blog Post #2

wow
Did You Know? 3.0 By Karl Fisch
As I watched this video, the first thing that came to my mind was what is the point. I understand that technology has greatly improved, but I am not sure if this video is saying it is a good or bad thing. There were many interesting facts in the video and some of it really shocked me. Also, I am very curious about how the information was obtained.
The thing that really stood out the most to me is how India has more honor kids than America has kids. That makes me wonder what they are doing right, or what are we doing wrong. I thought America was the most advanced country in the world but now after watching this video I am not sure. This video left me with a different perspective of America.
Mr. Winkle Wakes by Mathew Needleman

This is a neat video. I understood the point of it after my first time watching it. The video is about technology, and its advancement over the past one hundred years. What surprises me is how schools are left behind. After watching this video, I feel like schools are not preparing students for the reality of the world and its every day changes. If schools are not technologically advanced, then they are far behind.
I feel like everything is changing so fast and if you are slow about any little thing, then you will be left behind. It is already so much about technology that I do not know and I feel just like Mr. Winkle sometimes. Every time I feel like I am mastered one form of technology, it upgrades to something else. Like cell phones, every year there is another upgraded version of it.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

This video was not what I expected it to be. It made some interesting points about creativity and children. I thought the story about the little girl drawing the picture of God was funny. To me, as children get older and in school where right and wrong are such a big deal, they lose some creativity. Like Mr. Robinson said, children have a fear of being wrong and I agree no child wants to be wrong.
I love how he said that some of the most highly creative and intelligent people in the world think they are not because what they were good at in school was not valued. I think that I am lucky to be good in math and that it is valued, but not everyone is. I feel like the extracurricular activities are not viewed as important as the core courses but in actuality, they give out scholarships for them and there are special schools designed for them. I believe creativity should be incorporated into other aspects of learning and in time, I think the dropout rate in school will decrease.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

I really liked this video. I enjoyed watching it. I love how the teacher uses technology in her classroom, and is teaching her students to use it as well. The more I watch videos like this, the more I realize that technology is very important in today’s society. I also realize that I am not as computer literate as I thought I was.
As a future teacher, I really appreciated her approach to the school curriculum. I feel like teachers should use more than one method of teaching in the classroom. Just like her, I realize that not every student learns the same way and like her, I want to be able to reach a child no matter what his or her weaknesses are. Now, everything is being done with some form of technology.
