Summary Post C4T Teacher #4

apple

My first C4T comment was about SNL (Saturday Night Live). I informed him that I have never watched SNL, but I thought the video was funny. The second C4T was about his first week of school. He said how it was hard and that he need to work on a few things. My comments were about how I liked his post, and I thought it was very helpful because he was planning and getting organized. I say that because I am not good at planning and following through with things that I have planned.

C4K Summary Post

children playing

My C4K #9 was about a child who reminded everyone about the sacrifice veterans made. I let her know how I felt about her post, because it was amazing. So instead of summarizing it, I would like everyone to read it. http://kidblog.org/MissByrnesClass/kaylee67/lest-we-forget-3/
C4K #10 was about the planets. He had a picture that he used to help him remember the order of the planets from the sun.  I told him the way that I learned the planet, and about how it was nine planets when I was coming up. C4K #11 was a summary of a book. The book was about a little girl and Christmas. I told her that I thought that was a good story, and what I thought Christmas was about. I encouraged each of them to keep up the good work and let them know that they were doing a good job. C4K was a good experience for me.

Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX)
http://alex.state.al.us/index.php

Alabama Learning Exchange(ALEX)

ALEX was designed to share many types of educational materials and information. This site provides the Alabama course of study and different resources for parents, teachers, and students. This site provides lesson plans for teachers and web resources. Also, it provides different sites for students to focus on whatever subject and activity they want.

This is a very useful web site. This is my first time hearing of it, so I know others have not as well. I think this should be a resource put to use by all. I work in a school, and they have not ever mentioned this site or used it. This makes me wonder how many school and people in Alabama uses this site.

Additional Assignment #5

pencil

I really liked the posts. I thought they were very interesting. My favorite was the Sketchy Portraits: 8th Grade Identity and Pencils. This post really inspired me, because of how the student responded to the teacher. It made me wonder if I would have feel as if the student was being disrespectful as well. As a student, I do not think so but as a future teacher, I am not sure. I also really enjoyed He Just Likes the Class for the Pencils. If I am not mistaken, the pencil represents computers. I thought it was funny that all the other teachers felt that the only reason the child liked his classroom, was because of the pencils. I just do not believe that they did not acknowledge his talent and relationship with his students. Overall, these were great posts.

Progress Report on the Final Project

the end is near

For the final project, me and Kellie Grandquest will do a report about Evernote. We are going to explain and demonstrate how to use it. Then we are going to create an assignment that we could possibly use in our own classrooms, and do the assignment. Also, we will explain why Evernote is beneficial.

Watch the video Why We Need to Teach Technology in Schools and write a paragraph about your response.

Response
This is a good video. It shows how technology has changed over the years. Also, it shows the different ways that technology is used. From the invention of the telegraph to the invention of the computer, technology has transformed the world today. I agree with this video because if we do not change with the technology, we will be left behind. Everyday there is something new being invented or upgraded, and we have to upgrade with it. After watching this video the question, should everyone be technologically literate, comes to mind. My answer is YES.

Summary Response

My results showed that most people feel that everyone should be technologically literate. Also, it shows that most people have laptops and no one has ipads. To my surprise, most said they would rather be inside the classroom, than to take online classrooms. Also, everyone uses Facebook and no one uses MySpace or twitter.

The results were mostly what I expected. I figured that the first thing most people would do is check there social site before homework. I know that, because that is what I do. What I did not expect was that people use their computers for mostly homework. I say that because when I am not taking online classes, I use my computer for mainly surfing the web. My results proved that technology is a major part of society.

Blog Post #11

alphabets

This was a very interesting video. I like how well Ms. Cassidy incorporates technology into her classroom, and how engaged her students are. The thing that I would like to use in my classroom is blogging. I have enjoyed doing it in this class and the first graders love it, so I know my students will to. Another reason is that blogging is a good way for the students to get positive feedback and communicate with others worldwide. The wiki is also a great way of learning. I think they would be interested in it because they can find useful information, as well as, create their own page with their thoughts and ideas.

I think my biggest problem will be keeping the children off sites that are not related to the work. Also, having the work completed on time. I know for me now, I have the time to get the work done but I am lazy about it sometimes. What I think I would do is try to keep the workload reasonable, and be mindful of other things that my students might have going on. Once I figure out how I am going to incorporate math and technology, I think anything will be possible.

Summary Post C4T Teacher #3

teachers rock

My first comment was about how I want to be a good teacher. How I want my students to be able to understand me, and how I want to teach them more than just the curriculum. Also, how I want them to be able to talk to me, and know that I am there for them. My second comment was about fiction and reflection. It was about how fiction can help with creativity and critical thinking. Also, how blogging is a form of reflection and a good way to get feedback.

Summary Post C4K 3-7

All of my C4K posts are encouraging. I always tell the child that they are doing well and to keep up the good work. All of the children posts that I have commented on were good. One talked about her passion for tattoos, one had a riddle that I could not break, one had a picture of a trophy, and one had glitter pictures. All of the posts were completely different, but I liked them all. So far, C4K has been a great experience.

Blog Post #10

think about it education

An Open Letters to Educators by: Morgan Bayga

First off, I really liked the Dan Brown video. It really made a lot of sense. I completely agree with him. All most teachers do is stand in front of the class and read off power points. Technology has greatly advanced, and so much information is easily accessed online but now the educational system should advance before it is left behind. Like Morgan Bayga, dropping out of school is not my choice, but I understand Dan Brown’s reason to do so. Also, my experiences in the classrooms are a little from Morgan’s experiences. All of my teachers have encouraged group discussions and projects. Unlike Morgan, I am not completely in tuned with technology and I still have a lot to learn.

Tom Johnson’s Don’t Let Them Take the Pencils Home!

This is a good post. I really enjoyed reading it. I thought it was funny and helpful, because I have never heard that saying before. I love how Mr. Johnson did not let that stop him from doing what he thought was right for his class. Also, how he came up with a solution to contradict the saying. It is good that he did not spend time worrying about the problem, but fixing it.

Two Questions That Can Change Your Life by Daniel Pink

I have never thought about having a sentence. This is a great post, not because of creativity but because of the message behind it. I agree; everyone needs a sentence. Everyone should ask the question, was I better today than yesterday. I know I do not ask myself that question every night but if I did, I hope my answer would be yes. So my sentence is, “I am here to help”.

Additional Assignment #3

Sir Ken Robinson
Sir Ken Robinson: Changing Educational Paradigms
I think the most important thing that Sir Ken Robinson said was, “If you are interested in the model of education, you don’t start from production line mentality”. That is important to me because I believe everyone is different and learns at different paces. I believe that age should not play a part in education, but I understand why it might be a problem. When I say it might be a problem, I mean with the children themselves. I did not find anything that Mr. Robinson had to say disagreeable. He had valid points and reasons to back them up.
I think what I am being taught in the College of Education and what Mr. Robinson believes is very similar. They both believe children are different and learn in different ways. From what I have seen so far, the College of Education wants you to see the good and the bad of the education system. Also, it asks you to think about ways that you can improve it, if only in your own classroom. I believe that is what Mr. Robinson wants everyone to do. I am not sure what can be done to address the issues of Mr. Robinson. I believe it will take a lot to change the educational system. I really liked the presentation. It was different and creative. I have only seen one other video similar to it, but they are both good. If I had to do a presentation like this one, I would want to play the role of the director and/or idea generator.

#1 teacher
“What I Have Learned This Year” By: Mr. McClung
This is a good post. Mr. McClung had many good things to say. I work in an elementary school right now, and I notice much of what he has said. I have noticed that some teachers do not listen to their students and do not know or what to know where they come from, so they do not understand the child. I think a good teacher is someone who knows her students. They know when they are not doing their best, when something is wrong, and if they are struggling. Like Mr. McClung said, you have to listen to your students. Your students can help you improve your approach to teaching for the better. Some teachers do not realize that they can learn a lot from their students. When I become a teacher, I am going to remember what Mr. McClung has said.

Blog Post #8

This is How We Dream Parts 1 and 2 by: Richard Miller

I think he made a good point. Learning could be so much more than just writing something down. I liked the presentation of the post, although at the beginning I was distracted trying to read the words. I think his plan is big and bright, which I feel will inspire people to think outside the box. Also, it is more hands on, which many children/people would like.
To me, the school system is stuck in a rut. When I say that, I mean they are not allowing for much change. Teachers teach strictly from a guide, which limits their creativity as well as the students. I believe that if teachers could incorporate more technologies and know how to use it, than that would change a lot inside the classroom.
This comment is based off my experience in an elementary school now, and I feel that some do not think outside the box. I really enjoyed the video by Richard Miller, and I think smaller students would as well. I think they would be more interested in learning with technology, than with only the book as a tool. Also with technology, the lesson could be taken much further, which will only increase learning and their desire to learn. Technology is the key to many things, and I think learning is one of them.

The Chipper Series and EDM310 for Dummies
movie tape
The Chipper Series video was different. I understand the message that school is important, as well as time and structure. The crazy thing about this video to me is that people really think that way. Some people think there should not be any rules and/or deadlines, but where would this world be without it. CHAOTIC!
EDM310 for Dummies was very interesting. I can relate to that video, because I feel like that sometimes. It is so much work and very stressful. Sometimes when I am doing the work, I find myself asking the question why. What is the point of this assignment?  But, once I am finished, I know the answer. Like when I am watching the extremely long videos, I hate it while I am doing it but when I done, I think about all the important and interesting things I have just learned or heard about. Although I think I am doing a good job in the class so far, I think this course should be taken alone.
As far as video making, I am a very shy person. So if I had to be a part of a production, I would want to be behind the camera. One of the things that interest me most is math, so I would like to make a video about it. My video would consist of children inside the classroom enjoying their math lesson. Also, they would play games on the smartboard, as well as other hands on games. My passion is math and children, so I know that is what I would want my video to show.
Smartboards
smartboard
Why Smartboards are a Dumb Initiative by: Michael Staton and Why I Hate Interactive Whiteboards by: Bill Ferriter is interesting posts, with valid points. I feel like they are great tools in the classrooms. I use them to interact with the children, and they love it. The one thing that I like to do with the kids is play games. I understand the points that are made by Mr. Staton and Mr. Ferriter, but I think smartboards are a step up in the technology department.
I found this web site that talk about the good of smartboards. One of the things it says is how the children like it. That is a plus to me, because learning is about the children and getting them interested. I think the smartboard does that. Mr. Staton and Mr. Ferriter recognize that, but they feel the money could be used for something better. I am not saying they are not right, but I think the smartboards are useful.

Additional Assignment #2

How Kids Teach Themselves
 little girl working
1. What do you think? If learners are motivated, can they teach themselves?
  •  Yes. After seeing this video, I think anybody can teach himself or herself.
2. If those motivated learners are kids, can they teach themselves?
  • Yes. My two-year-old niece teaches herself things all the time. I think they just have to be interested in what it is.
3. What conditions are necessary for kids to teach themselves? For anyone to teach him or herself?
  • I think they just have to be interested in whatever it is and I think they need to be motivated.
4. What role do computers and internet access play in the process?
  • I think they play a big role because so much can be learned from them. Also, the many different uses of the computer and internet keeps the children interested.
5. What role does motivation, a desire to learn?
  • I think it is a major role. If a person is not motivated, then they probably will not have a desire to learn.
6. What roles do a problem, a question or multiple problems or questions play in the process?
  •  I think it may be hard and a road block for some, but for most I think it will be motivation.
7. How do you motivate someone to learn?
  •  I try to let them know of the benefits of learning and the good that can come out of it. Also, I tell them that they can do it and all is possible with hard work and dedication.
8. How are you motivated to learn?
  •  I have just always liked learning and wanted to be a teacher. I am my own motivator. I do this for me.
9. Can anyone who is not motivated to learn?
  • Anyone can learn. It just takes a little effort.
10. Do you teach yourself? When? Why?
  •  Sometimes I teach myself because I want to know something. Also, because I feel like further investigation is needed at times and there is not always going to be someone around to teach me.
11. What role does a teacher (either answer generally or use a specific example) play in your learning?
  • To me, a teacher is a guide. They are there to show you and assist you when there is a problem.
12. What is the most important idea, question or emotional response you take away with you as a result of watching this video?
  •  Children no matter their age can learn anything they put their mind to. I always thought some things are too hard for some children because of their age, but now I know that is not true.
13. What other questions or issues are raised by this video that should be considered and discussed by aspiring teachers?
  •  Why do some children in the United States disregard all the opportunities that they have? Why don’t they appreciate their educational benefits?

Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture
First I would like to start by saying this was a good video. I t took me a while to watch but I really liked it. The best part to me was when he sang happy birthday to his wife. I know that part was not the point of the speech, but I thought that was so sweet of him. Plus, I could tell that meant a lot to her. He is a sweet man.
I really do not know where to start. He accomplished so much in his life, and I did not think it was possible. I do not know, but maybe it is because I never had big dreams like him. All I ever wanted to be was a teacher. I never wanted to work at Disney World; I just wanted to visit, and I have done that. I have never wanted to fly or float because I am afraid of heights, but he wanted to and he accomplished that. My dreams have always been simple, and I feel like I am on the right path to accomplishing it.
Mr. Pausch is an amazing man. He went for everything that he set his mind to. He stopped at nothing to accomplish his dreams, and nothing was too big for him. I like his work ethic. I need to be more like him. I know that I do not put everything into all that I do all the time. Sometimes when I get overwhelmed, I do not do my very best, I do just enough to get by. After watching this video, I know that I have to do more than my best at everything I do and from now on I am going to try to do that.
I like the head fake learning method, which is when you learn one thing but while learning it, you learn a life lesson. I think this is an important method because you learn something important, while doing something fun. When I was younger, I did not always want people telling me what to do; and most I the time I knew it was the right way or the right thing but I wanted to learn that for myself. As a teacher, I want to incorporate this into my teaching method. I know many people do not like math but if I can make it a fun and interesting learning experience, I can change a lot of minds about math.

Summary Post C4T Teacher #2

My first teacher post was about that “Let’s Do more mentality”.  I commented on how I agreed with his post. People are always concerned about doing more, instead of doing right. If you are doing more and doing wrong, it is just as if you are not doing anything. His second post was about school being year-round and summer programs. I do not want school to be year-round and I am saying that as a student and future teacher. I said how I went to a summer program where there was learning and fun. Also, that more summer programs could be made for that purpose.

Blog Post #6

education
The Networked Student by Wendy Drexler
To me, it sounds like what we are doing in this class right now. We mainly do all of our work online and the teacher helps us along. So, are we considered network students? I like this kind of learning. It is more hands on and independent. I think independent guided studying, calls for analyzing things more instead of memorizing.
I liked the idea of having a teacher stand up and lecture for most subjects. However, for some things like history and technology, I feel like a teacher is not necessarily needed to lecture. I say that because with a subject like math, the little things matter and any minor error could cause a major problem; whereas in history everything is so precise and accurate. In any case, a teacher is needed but whether or not it is directly or indirectly is the question.
I liked the video. I think that it was a good idea for the simple pictures because they were not distracting, and I could concentrate on what was being said. They also were interested and different. With technology the way it is now, she could have gone in so many different directions in making this video. This time, simple said more.

A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)
She really knows how to work the internet. I have already learned so much since this class has started, but it amazes me how much I still do not know. As I watched this video, a question came to mind. How did she do that? I would love to learn how to setup a page like that. I think it is very neat and one day I hope to be able to navigate the internet as well as her.
The Machine is Changing Us by Michael Wesch
What he said about the MTV generation and today’s generation is so true. Now a day, most of us are materialistic and have a short attention span. So many different things go through my mind at one time, and sometimes I cannot focus on one thing for too long because my mind jumps to another. This is a very, very long video. It also proves his point about this generation and short attention spans. I had to keep putting the video on pause just to get through it. Overall, I think it was interesting and had ways of grabbing my attention, even if only for a short period.

Summary Post of C4K comment 1 and 2

hows it going

I comment on a student name Ryan’s About Me and the Manifesto posts. My comment on the About Me post was about how we have something in common because we both have big families, and that it is good to hear that education is important to him. My comment on the Manifesto post was about how I felt like he was heading in the right direction. I feel like his manifesto exhibited good qualities, like being respectful to his self, peers, and adults, were all good and positive. In both comments, I encouraged Ryan to continue to work hard, and he is sure to be successful.
